For historical reference, last year&#8217;s report is <a href=\"http:\/\/premodernmagic.com\/blog\/report-from-the-2019-northern-swedish-championships\/\">here<\/a>. Enjoy! \/ Martin<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Intro<\/h2>\n<p>Some background. The annual gaming convention that hosts the Swedish Nationals in Legacy was cancelled earlier this year. Johan Domeij, a local friend of mine who loves Legacy got the idea to host the Legacy Nationals in our town \u00d6rnsk\u00f6ldsvik instead. This meant moving the event approximately 1 000 km north, and careful considerations and logistical challenges to adapt and tend to players\u2019 and organizers\u2019 safety.<\/p>\n<p>So, for anyone not living in Sweden, our governmental restrictions allow for a maximum of 50 people in the same facility; keeping social distance, hygiene, hand sanitizers and so forth. You know the rest of the drill.<\/p>\n<p>To make a trip worthwhile for contenders that would travel from the southern parts of Sweden, we offered a mix of eternal tournaments throughout Friday to Sunday at separate facilities but within vicinity. I was in charge of Oldschool and Premodern. Thus here we are. This will be a tournament report from this year&#8217;s Premodern Northern Sweden Championship (Norrlandsm\u00e4sterskapen).<\/p>\n<p>Because we held the Premodern event on the Sunday (i.e. hometravel day for most attendees), we decided it was necessary to host a straight Swiss with an extra round instead of top 8 playoffs. The community is awesome and 31 players showed up! Just go to the end. Without further ado, here comes my tournament report.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<h2>The matches<\/h2>\n<div>\n<p>So here\u2019s a shocker. I played Elves with <a class=\"cardtip\" onclick=\"updateCardTip(39913, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseenter=\"updateCardTip(39913, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseleave=\"hideCardTip()\">Biorhythm<\/a>! Yes, I do own other Premodern decks, but Elves is by far the most fun I\u2019ve had in the format. So I keep trying out iterations. In the last months I\u2019ve tried <a class=\"cardtip\" onclick=\"updateCardTip(21399, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseenter=\"updateCardTip(21399, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseleave=\"hideCardTip()\">Tangle Wire<\/a> and <a class=\"cardtip\" onclick=\"updateCardTip(2081, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseenter=\"updateCardTip(2081, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseleave=\"hideCardTip()\">Winter Orb<\/a> in the main deck, which makes the control matchups a lot better as opposed to the earlier, more combo-oriented, <a class=\"cardtip\" onclick=\"updateCardTip(19739, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseenter=\"updateCardTip(19739, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseleave=\"hideCardTip()\">Collective Unconscious<\/a> version. It usually comes down to <a class=\"cardtip\" onclick=\"updateCardTip(39913, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseenter=\"updateCardTip(39913, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseleave=\"hideCardTip()\">Biorhythm<\/a>\u00a0vs if he can buy back infinite life.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Game 1<\/strong>: Andreas wins the roll and starts off with a <a class=\"cardtip\" onclick=\"updateCardTip(40121, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseenter=\"updateCardTip(40121, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseleave=\"hideCardTip()\">Plains<\/a> go. Jansson taps his lands, drops another one, and on my next turn I can play <a class=\"cardtip\" onclick=\"updateCardTip(39913, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseenter=\"updateCardTip(39913, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseleave=\"hideCardTip()\">Biorhythm<\/a> for the win.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Game 2<\/strong>: I keep a hand with <a class=\"cardtip\" onclick=\"updateCardTip(39913, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseenter=\"updateCardTip(39913, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseleave=\"hideCardTip()\">Biorhythm<\/a>, some mana dorks, <a class=\"cardtip\" onclick=\"updateCardTip(12427, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseenter=\"updateCardTip(12427, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseleave=\"hideCardTip()\">Multani&#8217;s Acolyte<\/a> and lands. He plays en-Kor creatures, I play dorks and <a class=\"cardtip\" onclick=\"updateCardTip(11582, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseenter=\"updateCardTip(11582, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseleave=\"hideCardTip()\">Elvish Champion<\/a>. On my turn 3, Jansson is on 16 life, but has assembled all combo pieces, and has an active <a class=\"cardtip\" onclick=\"updateCardTip(40542, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseenter=\"updateCardTip(40542, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseleave=\"hideCardTip()\">Starlit Sanctum<\/a> in play (and a <a class=\"cardtip\" onclick=\"updateCardTip(26311, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseenter=\"updateCardTip(26311, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseleave=\"hideCardTip()\">Forest<\/a> so my elves have forestwalk now\u2014relevant). So my move is to force him to gain infinite life now. I play <a class=\"cardtip\" onclick=\"updateCardTip(4777, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseenter=\"updateCardTip(4777, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseleave=\"hideCardTip()\">Overrun<\/a> (<a class=\"cardtip\" onclick=\"updateCardTip(10422, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseenter=\"updateCardTip(10422, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseleave=\"hideCardTip()\">Gaea&#8217;s Cradle<\/a> is good) and attack in for a potential of 16 damage. Before damage, Jansson does his thing: redirecting the next damage to his cleric infinite times and then sacs the cleric with <a class=\"cardtip\" onclick=\"updateCardTip(40542, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseenter=\"updateCardTip(40542, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseleave=\"hideCardTip()\">Starlit Sanctum<\/a> to gain infinite life. Next turn I can play <a class=\"cardtip\" onclick=\"updateCardTip(39913, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseenter=\"updateCardTip(39913, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseleave=\"hideCardTip()\">Biorhythm<\/a> to adjust his life total to a much smaller number: 1, and attack with forestwalk for the win.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Result<\/strong>: 2\u20130<\/p>\n<h3>Match 2 vs Joakim Almelund (Pink Prison)<\/h3>\n<p>Joakim wins the roll. That\u2019s rough, \u2018cause this match is a stretch. We both know what we\u2019re facing since we had lunch the day before, talking about what sweet decks we were gonna bring.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Game 1<\/strong>: He mulls to six, which makes me keep my seven. Although I don\u2019t have a turn 1-drop, it has a <a class=\"cardtip\" onclick=\"updateCardTip(5823, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseenter=\"updateCardTip(5823, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseleave=\"hideCardTip()\">Priest of Titania<\/a>, lands and some disruption. I figured I have 18 one-drops in the deck, so me being on the draw seems likely to give me something to draw and play on turn 1. He starts with <a class=\"cardtip\" onclick=\"updateCardTip(3755, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseenter=\"updateCardTip(3755, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseleave=\"hideCardTip()\">Undiscovered Paradise<\/a> into <a class=\"cardtip\" onclick=\"updateCardTip(2349, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseenter=\"updateCardTip(2349, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseleave=\"hideCardTip()\">Land Tax<\/a>. I draw a <a class=\"cardtip\" onclick=\"updateCardTip(12427, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseenter=\"updateCardTip(12427, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseleave=\"hideCardTip()\">Multani&#8217;s Acolyte<\/a>, play <a class=\"cardtip\" onclick=\"updateCardTip(40105, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseenter=\"updateCardTip(40105, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseleave=\"hideCardTip()\">Forest<\/a> and go. This takes some thinking. So, Pink Prison can play quite aggressive here with an early <a class=\"cardtip\" onclick=\"updateCardTip(30561, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseenter=\"updateCardTip(30561, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseleave=\"hideCardTip()\">Devastating Dreams<\/a> for extreme value. I choose to play <a class=\"cardtip\" onclick=\"updateCardTip(5823, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseenter=\"updateCardTip(5823, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseleave=\"hideCardTip()\">Priest of Titania<\/a> and <a class=\"cardtip\" onclick=\"updateCardTip(40105, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseenter=\"updateCardTip(40105, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseleave=\"hideCardTip()\">Forest<\/a> and pass the turn. Next turn, Joakim searches for basics, and plays <a class=\"cardtip\" onclick=\"updateCardTip(30561, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseenter=\"updateCardTip(30561, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseleave=\"hideCardTip()\">Devastating Dreams<\/a>. He plays land go. On my turn, I think I took mana from the first Cradle and jammed another one, played <a class=\"cardtip\" onclick=\"updateCardTip(39913, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseenter=\"updateCardTip(39913, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseleave=\"hideCardTip()\">Biorhythm<\/a> and swung in (don\u2019t remember if I had two <a class=\"cardtip\" onclick=\"updateCardTip(10422, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseenter=\"updateCardTip(10422, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseleave=\"hideCardTip()\">Gaea&#8217;s Cradle<\/a> to enable it or if it was a <a class=\"cardtip\" onclick=\"updateCardTip(5823, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseenter=\"updateCardTip(5823, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseleave=\"hideCardTip()\">Priest of Titania<\/a> that came down prior turn).<\/p>\n<p>Mikael discussed after the game if perhaps playing his new Oath there was a bit greedy, as he had <a class=\"cardtip\" onclick=\"updateCardTip(2148, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseenter=\"updateCardTip(2148, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseleave=\"hideCardTip()\">Counterspell<\/a> in hand. But his other creature in the deck was <a class=\"cardtip\" onclick=\"updateCardTip(5546, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseenter=\"updateCardTip(5546, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseleave=\"hideCardTip()\">Crater Hellion<\/a>, so he wanted to end my board fast. All random factors today have been on my side. Both against Oath and Pink Prison. Well, luck is a large part of what you need in order to survive in Magic.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Result<\/strong>: 2\u20130<\/p>\n<p><strong>Final match result:<\/strong> 4\u20131\u20131<\/p>\n<p>Man, I\u2019ve missed paper magic IRL. I really enjoyed playing this tournament. Also a great experience in playing six different decks, where a lot of them are hard match-ups! I\u2019ll keep stating that the adding of <a class=\"cardtip\" onclick=\"updateCardTip(21399, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseenter=\"updateCardTip(21399, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseleave=\"hideCardTip()\">Tangle Wire<\/a> and <a class=\"cardtip\" onclick=\"updateCardTip(2081, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseenter=\"updateCardTip(2081, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseleave=\"hideCardTip()\">Winter Orb<\/a> is what makes Elves playable against control. <a class=\"cardtip\" onclick=\"updateCardTip(39913, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseenter=\"updateCardTip(39913, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseleave=\"hideCardTip()\">Biorhythm<\/a> is huge and solves stuff where a simple mass of creature attacks does not, and of course quite effective when your opponent just so happens to get infinite life. Tell us about your Magic background, how come you play Premodern?<br \/>\n<\/strong>\u2013 Thanks! I started playing MTG as a kid, around 1998, and I have never stopped playing since. In recent years I\u2019ve been more into Oldschool and Vintage, and now later on, I\u2019ve found Premodern where I get to play with a lot of cards from my childhood. I really enjoy Premodern, both because of the joy in playing with old cards but also in brewing new decks. And there is so much to explore in this format! Also, what better feeling than finding your old gems getting played?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why did you choose Pink Prison for today\u2019s tournament?<br \/>\n<\/strong>\u2013\u00a0I was involved in building the <a href=\"http:\/\/premodernmagic.com\/blog\/the-dreams-of-a-father-devastation-of-premodern\/\">Pink Prison deck<\/a> with Erik Sundberg but I\u2019ve actually never played it myself before. So I felt that I should try it out sometime, and since we didn&#8217;t find another brew we were happy with for now, to bring to this tournament, I went with Pink Prison.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Which card was MVP during the day?<br \/>\n<\/strong>\u2013 <a class=\"cardtip\" onclick=\"updateCardTip(2349, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseenter=\"updateCardTip(2349, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseleave=\"hideCardTip()\">Land Tax<\/a>\u00a0was MVP for sure! That card is so broken. You can mulligan to 3\u20135 and still be ahead on round 2 and forward.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Any changes to be made?<br \/>\n<\/strong>\u2013 Maybe the wincons in the deck, and what to do if you lose game 1. But since that didn&#8217;t happen today I don&#8217;t have much to add :).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Best and worst play of the day?<br \/>\n<\/strong>&#8211; The best, I think, was the feeling when you\u2019ve won game 1 and can board out your wincons and replace them with <a class=\"cardtip\" onclick=\"updateCardTip(2051, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseenter=\"updateCardTip(2051, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseleave=\"hideCardTip()\">Ivory Tower<\/a>. The worst was when I played <a class=\"cardtip\" onclick=\"updateCardTip(10654, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseenter=\"updateCardTip(10654, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseleave=\"hideCardTip()\">Gamble<\/a> and missed. That happened versus you on Elves where I didn\u2019t get my <a class=\"cardtip\" onclick=\"updateCardTip(30561, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseenter=\"updateCardTip(30561, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseleave=\"hideCardTip()\">Devastating Dreams<\/a> when I needed it. That match ended up with a draw instead.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Best and worst match-up?<br \/>\n<\/strong>\u2013 I think the best match-ups are slow blue decks and creature decks like Goblins. You have really strong plays versus both these kind of decks, and they don&#8217;t have that much of disruption. My worst match-ups should be aggressive decks that can either pressure you with fast mana or big creatures. So decks like Elves, The Rock and Dreadnought can become problematic.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So, can we expect any new brews coming from you and the rest of the Gothenburg crew in the near future?<br \/>\n\u2013 <\/strong>We are working on some brews! However, we didn&#8217;t feel like they\u2019re fully solved yet and not ready to play in today\u2019s tournament. But we will show you some new cool decks in the future! For example, we\u2019re working on some new ways to use <a class=\"cardtip\" onclick=\"updateCardTip(29936, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseenter=\"updateCardTip(29936, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseleave=\"hideCardTip()\">Standstill<\/a> and also a new deck with <a class=\"cardtip\" onclick=\"updateCardTip(6160, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseenter=\"updateCardTip(6160, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseleave=\"hideCardTip()\">Sphere of Resistance<\/a>.
