I sipped my coffee. Richard Garfield himself was enjoying breakfast only a few meters from our table.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Let&#8217;s try something I&#8217;ve been working on for a while\u201d<\/em>, said Martin Berlin, as he pulled a few deck boxes out of his bag and handed out to the four of us. The nostalgia was tangible as we drew our first sevens.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My introduction to <a href=\"http:\/\/premodernmagic.com\/#about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Premodern<\/a>, in 2015 northern Italy at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nebraskaswar.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nebraska&#8217;s War<\/a>, was surreal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fast forward three years, and I loathe to say I have yet to play Premodern again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That, however, is about to change.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-375\" src=\"http:\/\/premodernmagic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/recurring-nightmare-683x280.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"983\" height=\"403\" srcset=\"https:\/\/premodernmagic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/recurring-nightmare-683x280.png 683w, https:\/\/premodernmagic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/recurring-nightmare-683x280-300x123.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 983px) 100vw, 983px\" \/><em>Suffering from Sciurophobia<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As I try to get a grip on the format, I find myself asking: <em>\u201cwhere do I even start\u201d<\/em>? The <a href=\"http:\/\/premodernmagic.com\/decks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">deck section<\/a> here is excellent, but limited. How do I get an overview of the shape and nature of the format?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It dawned on me that the place to start would be reading up on <a href=\"https:\/\/mtg.gamepedia.com\/Extended\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Extended<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Extended format never covered quite the same timespan as Premodern, the two most relevant periods being:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>mtgtop8: <a href=\"http:\/\/mtgtop8.com\/format?f=EX&amp;meta=41\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ice Age\u2013Odyssey<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<em>(with ABUR duals)<br \/>\n<small>Ice Age, Alliances, Homelands, Mirage, 5th Edition, Tempest, Urza&#8217;s, 6th Edition, Masques, Invasion, 7th Edition, Odyssey, duals<\/small><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>mtgtop8: <a href=\"http:\/\/mtgtop8.com\/format?f=EX&amp;meta=7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tempest\u2013Kamigawa<\/span><\/a><br \/>\n<em><small>Tempest, Urza&#8217;s, 6th Edition, Masques, Invasion, 7th Edition, Odyssey, Onslaught, Mirrodin, Kamigawa<\/small><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While other periods have some relevance, these two have the largest overlap. The first time period misses out on 4th Edition, Chronicles and Onslaught. The second includes two sets that are not legal in Premodern. Perusing the old lists on mtgtop8, we find that many of the card choices in the Extended sections are legal in today&#8217;s Premodern.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We quickly expand our deck name vocabulary with:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sligh, The Rock, Trix, Angry Hermit, Three-Deuce, Suicide Black, Fiends, Secret Force, Draco Explosion, Oath, Reanimator, Psychatog, Aluren,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the list goes on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-376\" src=\"http:\/\/premodernmagic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/plaguelord-730x280-700x268.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"345\" srcset=\"https:\/\/premodernmagic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/plaguelord-730x280-700x268.png 700w, https:\/\/premodernmagic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/plaguelord-730x280-300x115.png 300w, https:\/\/premodernmagic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/plaguelord-730x280.png 730w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><em>&#8220;Feed me, my millions&#8221;<strong class=\"None headword\" lang=\"mul\">\u2014The Rock, Probably<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Great, we\u2019re ready to blindly netdeck, but where do we go to find out why the lists look the way they do? To brew and tune, we need to form an understanding of the basis behind card choices in the various lists.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fortunately, StarCity Games has an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.starcitygames.com\/articles\/tags\/Extended\/1995-03-20\/2003-10-20\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">excellent archive of Extended articles<\/a>, filterable by the relevant years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There we find everything from tournament reports, match up strategies, sideboard tech, and deck list tuning. It does, however, give us a base to stand on as we throw ourselves into this wide open format.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"card-image-preview\" src=\"http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Handlers\/Image.ashx?multiverseid=3629&type=card\" width=\"200\">\u00a0 <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"card-image-preview\" src=\"http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Handlers\/Image.ashx?multiverseid=2497&type=card\" width=\"200\">\u00a0 <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"card-image-preview\" src=\"http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Handlers\/Image.ashx?multiverseid=2714&type=card\" width=\"200\">\u00a0 <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"card-image-preview\" src=\"http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Handlers\/Image.ashx?multiverseid=4944&type=card\" width=\"200\"><br \/>\n<em>But wait, is that legal?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When, for example, an article mentions that <a class=\"cardtip\" onclick=\"updateCardTip(2367, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseenter=\"updateCardTip(2367, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseleave=\"hideCardTip()\">Swords to Plowshares<\/a> has just rotated, opening up the possibility for another deck to shine, we have to remember that this format defining all-star is legal in Premodern.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"cardtip\" onclick=\"updateCardTip(4944, 'true'); showCardTip()\" onmouseenter=\"updateCardTip(4944, 'true'); showCardTip()\" onmouseleave=\"hideCardTip()\">Wasteland<\/a> was very popular during early Extended, which can likely be attributed to the special rule that kept <a href=\"https:\/\/mtg.gamepedia.com\/Dual_land\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ABUR duals<\/a> legal. In Premodern, unless your deck is geared towards mana denial, <a class=\"cardtip\" onclick=\"updateCardTip(4944, 'true'); showCardTip()\" onmouseenter=\"updateCardTip(4944, 'true'); showCardTip()\" onmouseleave=\"hideCardTip()\">Wasteland<\/a> serves better as a utility card.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two of the most popular cards in old Extended lists were <a class=\"cardtip\" onclick=\"updateCardTip(2497, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseenter=\"updateCardTip(2497, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseleave=\"hideCardTip()\">Brainstorm<\/a> and <a class=\"cardtip\" onclick=\"updateCardTip(3629, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseenter=\"updateCardTip(3629, ''); showCardTip()\" onmouseleave=\"hideCardTip()\">Vampiric Tutor<\/a>. Both of these are banned in Premodern, reducing consistency, or the possibility of easily building toolbox-style decks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After my journey through the historic archives, I find myself trying to shape <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.starcitygames.com\/magic\/extended\/4072_Rockin_In_The_USA_PT_Houston_Report_17th_Place.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rock<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to my liking, scouring the giant card-pool for answers. Right now I&#8217;m looking closely at <a class=\"cardtip\" onclick=\"updateCardTip(3618, 'true'); showCardTip()\" onmouseenter=\"updateCardTip(3618, 'true'); showCardTip()\" onmouseleave=\"hideCardTip()\">Funeral Charm<\/a>, or <a class=\"cardtip\" onclick=\"updateCardTip(19589, 'true'); showCardTip()\" onmouseenter=\"updateCardTip(19589, 'true'); showCardTip()\" onmouseleave=\"hideCardTip()\">Vendetta<\/a>, as answers to the rampant <a class=\"cardtip\" onclick=\"updateCardTip(9851, 'true'); showCardTip()\" onmouseenter=\"updateCardTip(9851, 'true'); showCardTip()\" onmouseleave=\"hideCardTip()\">Goblin Lackey<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where will you start?<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em>Martin Stark is a casual Magic player from Stockholm, Sweden.
